LOVE - Karen

Hey everyone,

I have a layout to share today, which I created using some of my all time favourite Dusty Attic pieces ( listed below)  The layout, which stars my 3rd oldest son, Samuel, and his girlfriend Sharnee was published in Scrapbook Creations magazine this month, as part of their 'Colour challenge'.

I sprayed and inked the background, using a mix of Lindy stamp gang sprays, and chalk inks, applied with a makeup sponge.

The Dusty chippies are simply painted with Dusty in colour acrylic paint, in Alabaster, and again, I prefer to apply this with a makeup sponge. I've used a charcoal coloured ink, to colour the LOVE title.

I've used lots of gorgeous Manor House Creations flowers, and lots of fussy cut floral images from the Graphic 45 papers. The mauve butterflies are images I found on my computer, which I printed onto cardstock and fussy cut out.

'Footprints' Layout by DT Karen Shady

Hi and welcome to the Dusty Attic blog. Its Karen here to share with you a layout of my youngest son, Harry. The photo was taken on a recent holiday to the Grampians national park.

The Dusty attic grasses suit my photo perfectly. I used a very simple stippling technique to decorate them. I first painted both pieces using Dusty in colour acrylic paint in Pesto, then, mixed a little Alabaster to some Pesto, to make a very light green. Then simply stippled that onto the pieces, using a hard bristled paint brush.

I had a few leftover pieces of the Chicken wire panel, which I tucked in and around my layout to finish it off.

June ATC's by Karen, Audrey & Michelle

June ATC's by Karen, Audrey & Michelle

This months theme is Collage.
A collage is a work of art composed of numerous materials, such as paper, newsprint, photographs, ribbons or other objects attached to background support, such as plain paper. A collage can even be made with physical materials or electronic images, attaching them to a digital background. Originating from the French word "coller", meaning "to glue", the collage allows you to experiment with a wide range of materials to achieve amazing end results. This article provides a sample of the many possibilities limited only by your creativity and imagination.

Hi there everyone, Its Karen here to share with you my ATC for the May challenge. I really had a lot of fun with this one.

To colour the branch and nest, I first painted them using Dusty in colour - Gingernut, then sponged on some dark brown ink to the edges to give a little definition to the both.

I painted the little birds using Dusty in colour - Alabaster, then stamped a script image over the painted surface once it was dry. I then finished the birds off by, again, sponging some brown ink around the edges.

The theme this month for the Dusty Attic ATC is 'Collage' I love collage, it’s a technique where anything goes really. The background is a collage using a combination of stamping & embossing, paint, scrunched text paper, German scrap, tape, muslin, ink etc. Here's my ATC.

"43"Layout by DT Karen Shady

Hi everyone,
Let me start by saying, just how much fun I had creating this layout. Creating it was something totally new to me. I attended a class run by the amazingly talented Finnabair recently, and have taken a few of her ideas and techniques, and added a few twists, and little of my own style, and, I have to admit, I am very happy with the final result.
I have used lots of gorgeous DUSTY ATTIC pieces, along with some Gesso, Texture paste, and heaps of gorgeous spray inks to put this layout together.

"Art Deco" ATCs by Michelle, Audrey and Karen

"My Love" Art Deco ATC by Karen Shady
Hi, Its Karen here today, to share with you my take on the Dusty Attic ATC challenge for May. This month the challenge prompt is ART DECO. I wasn't really familiar with this style, in fact I had to google it, as I really had no idea. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the glamorous, French inspired images.

I found this gorgeous image of the dancing couple on the internet, printed it out twice, onto white cardstock, used one as the base of my ATC, and cut the dress, and the man's jacket from the second image, mounting onto foam tape, to create a kind of paper tole effect. Which you can see in more detail in the picture below

I love the gorgeous ATC frames from The Dusty Attic. This time, I have painted it using a makeup wedge, in Dusty in Colour Fine Silver.

We look forward to seeing your ATC creation this month

"Vogue" Art Deco ATC by Michelle Grant

Hi there, the theme this months Dusty Attic's ATC Challenge is "ART DECO"
This theme is a little harder as it is not so commonly known what Art Deco is.
Think 1920's to the 1940's geometric and glamour.
Art Deco (/ˌɑrt ˈdɛkoʊ/), or Deco, is an influential visual arts design style which first appeared in France during the 1920s, flourished internationally during the 30s and 40s, then waned in the post-World War II era.[1] It is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with Machine Age imagery and materials. The style is often characterized by rich colors, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation.

Deco emerged from the Interwar period when rapid industrialization was transforming culture. One of its major attributes is an embrace of technology. This distinguishes Deco from the organic motifs favored by its predecessor Art Nouveau.

Historian Bevis Hillier defined Art Deco as "an assertively modern style...[that] ran to symmetry rather than asymmetry, and to the rectilinear rather than the curvilinear; it responded to the demands of the machine and of new material...[and] the requirements of mass production."[2]

During its heyday Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.
Hopefully that helps give you a few more ideas on tackling this theme! :)

I painted and drew this 40's girl, well that is what I was aiming for anyway! LOL

"Old Hollywood" Art Deco ATC by Audrey Underwood

My inspiration came from the glam of Old Hollywood, the pin curls and finger waves women wore in their hair. The angles and curves in the buildings and the highly polished veneer of the furniture.
During its heyday Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. Building became more angular with curves. You can still see buildings with a strong Art Deco influence around these days.
Woman became braver with fashion and etiquette. They cut their hair and even became smokers in public.
The images above came from Google Images.

"Tags by" - Karen Shady

Hi there, Karen here today, to share with you some cute little tags I made, using 2 gorgeous Dusty Attic pieces, which I really love, and think they look just brilliant used on tags. For the tag top, Ive used the Ornate corner #6 and for the bottom, Ive used the 2 scrolls from the Garden frame set. I have simply painted both using Dusty in colour - Alabaster, these paints are fabulous, the coverage is amazing, and I only ever have to use 2 coats on my chipboard. I also sponged a little soft brown ink on the edges of my chippy pieces.
A handy hint, I like to use a makeup sponge whan applying paint to my chippy pieces, it gives a much finer coverage, gets into all the little nooks, and is great when painting some of the more intricate Dusty pieces, as the sponge seems to suck the paint out of the tiny hole in the chipboard.
